The Bishops of the Maltese islands will be giving Pope Benedict XVI a miniature sculpture of Christ the King monument, sculptured by internationally renowned artist Antonio Sciortino. The original sculpture was inaugurated on the occasion of the Eucharistic Congress held in Malta in 1913.
The silver statue being presented by the Maltese Bishops on behalf of the Maltese people has been moulded in clay by a young Maltese artist, Christopher Ebejer and hand chiselled in 925/00 silver by Laga ltd.
The statue stands 16 inches high and will be presented during the Sunday, 18th April, morning Mass celebrations at the Floriana Granaries.
Besides the gift, the Bishops gave a donation of €35,000, for the victims of the Haiti earthquake. The funds were raised by Catholics from the Dioceses of Malta and Gozo. A collection of over 1000 messages, collected through sms, was given to the Pope, where people offered their prayers and solidarity towards him and also asked for his blessings.
